Gajah Gallery's Power, Play, Perception in KL

Power, Play, Perception is a group exhibition featuring 13 artists from four countries.

They are Ashley Bickerton, Erizal As, Fika Ria Santika, Handiwirman Saputra, Mangu Putra, Muhajidin Nurrahman, Rudi Mantofani anf Yunizar from Indonesia. Kayleigh Goh and Sabri Idrus from Malaysia as well as Jason Lim and Suzann Victor from Singapore.

The exhibition is said to provoke the following questions: How is power exercised in the distinct cultures, histories, spiritualities, and systems of knowledge of the contemporary Southeast Asian artists featured?

Liquid Light

Liquid Light is a group exhibition featuring 18 artists from six countries.

The participating artists are Deusa Blumke from Brazil, Nadja Klueter from Germany, Kamalakshi Saika & Shahnaz Ali from India and Jedidiah Angkasa from Indonesia. From Malaysia, the artists are John Wong , Melanie Gooi, Syafiq Hariz and Valerie Ng. And from Singapore, they are Idris Ali, Jeffery Wandly, Masturah Sha’ari, Nhawfal Juma’at, Tan Chye Tiong Ronald, Tumadi Patri, Yap Zhiwen, Wandly Yazid and Yusoff Latiff.

A-Residency by HOM Art Trans

Malaysian artists, Wong Ming Hao and Joy Ng, have completed a six-month residency programme entitled, A-Residency, at local art space, HOM Art Trans.

Relationship

Relationship is the title of a group exhibition featuring eight Malaysian artists. They are Faiz Z. A., Hafizuddin Azman, Haimiza Johan, Haziq Syawal, Ho Mei Kei, Hug Yin Wan, Lina Tan and Safuan Nasiar.

The exhibition comprises a total of 32 works. The medium varies from oil and acrylic paint and bitumen, to woodcut and perspex carving.

The works range in size from 40cm by 40cm to 240cm by 195cm and are priced from RM600 to RM10,500.

View from the Tower

Kuala Lumpur-based Richard Koh Fine Art gallery, opens a new art space in Bangkok called, Richard Koh Projects, with a solo exhibition by Thai artist Natee Utarit entitled, View from the tower.

The exhibition is said to be Natee’s first solo exhibition in Bangkok after 11 years.

The paintings depict scenes from outside the artist's studio window and the works are said to reflect the basics of painting.

The painting and the frame are said to function as metaphors for the act of looking out the window and onto the world outside.

Masks and Stories

Masks and Stories is a group exhibition featuring four Malaysian and Indonesian artists. They are Caryn Koh, Dedy Sufriadi, Indra Dodi and Syahbandi Samat.

The works are said to revolve around the idea of a mask that allows one's true self to "navigate" society. They are also said to question how the mask becomes an important element in storytelling within visual art.

The gallery’s press release states, “[According to Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung], each of us wears a mask, and depending on the social situation we may be in, that mask may change.”

The Way of The Flesh

The Way of The Flesh is a group exhibition featuring eight emerging artists from The Philippines. They are Ana Verayo, Art Sanchez, Ernest Concepcion, Dexter Sy, Jason Montinola, Kaloy Sanchez, Lec Cruz and Valerie Chua.

The show also features two guest artists, Kow Leong Kiang (Malaysia) and Ong-Arj Loeamornpagsin (Thailand).

The works are said to showcase the mastery of figurative art. They range in size from 30cm by 30cm to 100cm by 150cm and are priced from RM600 to RM28,000.

The show opens on July 7 at 8pm.

Creating new art to recall the past

Seven Decades is a group exhibition in Myanmar featuring 19 artists. They are Htein Lin, San Minn, Dr. Sun Myint, Win Pe, Chaw Ei Thein, Sonny Nyein, Maung Di, Phyu Mon, San Oo, Chan Aye, Wah Nu, Pe Maung Same, Soe Naing, Aung Myint, Sandar Khine, MPP Ye Myint - Ma Thanegi, Aye Ko and Ngu Eain Htet Myet.

Smart Shows

Australian artist Sally Smart’s latest exhibitions in Indonesia are entitled, The Choreography of Cutting and P.A.R.A.D.E.

The exhibitions are organised by Honold Fine Art and will be shown at two separate venues.

The Choreography of Cutting comprises a large collage work that resemble a curtain and an installation of suspended puppets.

The works are said to be a continuation of Smart's previous series which began in 2015.

Unrestrained and raw talent

In Defence of Poetry is the debut exhibition of a new collective known as Kill The Radio.

The collective aims to promote local artists and their art which deserve greater exposure and recognition.

"They will be given free rein to showcase their works unrestrained and raw," states the collective's press release.

The exhibition features 10 Malaysian artists. They are Ajim Juxta, Andy Wauman, Blank Malaysia, James Ly, Kara Inez, Sofia Haron, Sophia Kamal, Sliz, Tomi Heri and Yee Leng.

The works will be displayed in a warehouse that will soon be demolished.
