“Ismail Hashim: Essays, Interviews & Archives” is a multi-faceted four-part, posthumous retrospective exhibition tracing the legacy of the late photographer and includes a roundtable discussion.

Part I includes four essays that “contextualize” Ismail’s early formative years. These essays highlight the people involved and the “art historical” developments that shaped his works. The writings also aim to analyse the formal, aesthetic and thematic thrusts.

Part II focuses on excerpts from three interviews held with Ismail Hashim. The late photographer recalled stories of his childhood and formative years, discussing his art and articulating his worldviews.

Part III and IV are to be read and seen as “reflective” of each other and constitute the core of the Ismail Hashim Project. The writings in Part III originate from hands-on experiences, research and dialogues generated in the course of developing the archive, art estate and exhibitions.

The scheduled event will be launched by Tan Sri Musa Mohamad, former Education Minister of Malaysia (1999-2004) and former Universiti Sains Malaysia vice-chancellor (1982-1995), followed by the roundtable discussion.
