Art Expo Malaysia (AEM) returns for its 12th edition in 2018. Touted as the longest-running international art fair in Southeast Asia, this year's edition features 65 art galleries from 22 countries, exhibiting over 1,000 works.

AEM 2018 unveils two new special exhibition areas titled 1+9 Southeast Asia Special Exhibition Area and Japan Pavilion.

1+9 Southeast Asia Special Exhibition Area is said to offer different approaches to exhibition presentation and appreciation. The area will feature nine galleries; Wei-Ling Gallery frontlines the project with a showcase of Chong Kim Chiew, Chin Kong Yee and Chen Wei Meng. Other galleries are A+ Works of Art (Chang Fee Ming), Richard Koh Fine Art (Zelin Seah) and Segaris Art Centre (Zulkifli Yusoff, Ramlan Abdullah, Jalaini Abu Hassan and Fauzan Omar). The others are Gajah Gallery (Singapore), Subhashok Art Centre (Thailand), Srisasanti Gallery (Indonesia), Eskinita Art Gallery (Philippines) and CUC Gallery (Vietnam).

The Japan Pavilion will feature over 30 artists from eight galleries. The galleries are Gallery UG, Gallery Hanakagesho, Gallery Ishikawa, Gallery Seek, Gallery Suiha, Hakkendo Gallery, Smart Ship Gallery and Kinosho Kikaku. The galleries are Gallery UG, Gallery Hanakagesho, Gallery Ishikawa, Gallery Seek, Gallery Suiha, Hakkendo Gallery, Smart Ship Gallery and Kinosho Kikaku.

In a press release by the fair, it is mentioned that Art Expo Malaysia is under the Royal Patronage of Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Perlis, DYTM Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and DYTM Tuanku Hajjah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil.

The press release quotes them as saying, "We, as the Royal Patron, have watched over the growth of the Art Expo Malaysia, and are proud of its achievements and progress. [As years go by], we see better quality of artworks and even masterpieces by some of the most famous names in the art world. We see increasing visitorship and most importantly the increasing awareness towards art appreciation in the public, increasing media coverage on the Expo be it locally or abroad as it is worth reporting about, participation from more countries, higher sales of artworks recorded, just to mention a few."

"[This] is achieved via the hard work and painstaking effort [of] the organisers, where they overcome daunting challenges and obstacles, [strive] to improve on the quality of the Expo in every aspect to meet international expectations. This is the Malaysian fighting spirit."

"We hope the organisers [will continue] adding new programmes and come up with interesting attractions, in order to value-add and also to make the Art Expo Malaysia something special that the art enthusiasts, whether at home or abroad, are keen to visit every year. The Art Expo Malaysia has definitely brought the visual arts industry in Malaysia a big leap forward. Syabas!”

The press release also contained a quote from co-founder and fair director Sim Pojinn, "Art Expo Malaysia promotes Malaysian art in an international art platform, promoting local galleries and artists world widely, educating the public about art appreciation and art investment, promoting arts to a wider community (via intensive marketing) thus nurturing the interest towards arts in them, bolstering Kuala Lumpur as an important art hub in South-east Asia that is active in art commerce and art development, as well as networking within the community. Following last year’s success of recording good sales and visitorship of 30,000 people, we hope to achieve a greater success while we improve from different aspects.”
