• Pioneer of portrait painting, regarded as “Father of Malaysian Portrait Painting”

• Settled in Malaya in 1947, becoming a citizen in 1956

• Bestowed title of “Royal Portrait Painter” by the Sultan of Selangor in 1990

• Member of the board of the National Art Gallery until 1989

• Received informal art tuition from a Japanese artist from 1942-44 during the Japanese Occupation as a young man, with gifted oil paints from a Japanese officer

• Formed the Angakatan Pelukis Semenanjung (The Peninsular Artists Force) in 1956

• Style follows the academic tradition of European realism. His subjects range from royalty to common folk
