Beauty on Canvas

“Beauty” informs the idea behind Chong Siew Ying’s painting Paper Rose2007.

Part of the series entitled On Beauty that was completed between 2006 and 2011, the painting portrays a lady’s face surrounded by bright red roses and the faint outline of trees. The title itself reflects the illusory nature of beauty – a depiction of how a paper rose is, after all, mere paper in the end and not real.

International influence in Malaysian art

The Importance of Ib

Drawn by the political commotion of May 13 in 1969, he returned home in September that year after a successful international career and created a namesake painting. May 13 caused enough controversy to attract the attention of the then Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak. After their discussion, the Malaysian flag that “Ib”  – as the artist was popularly known – had blackened and used as a canvas, was eventually allowed to go on public exhibition.

Valued at RM2mil, the 32 paintings and a sculpture to be sold at The Edge Auction’s inaugural sale of Modern & Contemporary Malaysian Art on June 29 offer seasoned collectors and serious art investors the chance to acquire artworks of excellent provenance.

Available for public viewing from now till June 27 at the newly-opened, The Edge Galerie in Kuala Lumpur, the artworks include a scroll painting from the 1970s by the celebrated Chinese ink master Chen Wen Hsi. The painting has a price estimate of between RM35,000 and RM50,000.

Hidden Meanings

Focusing on quality and provenance

With two weeks to go before The Edge Auction’s inaugural sale of Modern and Contemporary Malaysian Art on June 29, art enthusiasts will have the chance to view all 33 works in Kuala Lumpur.

Scheduled for June 21-27 and from 11am-7pm, the public preview will be held at the newly completed gallery space known as The Edge Galerie in Mont’ Kiara. A similar preview was held in Singapore last weekend attended by prominent collectors and representatives of art institutions.

Works of late artists in demand

Artworks of the late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng and Tan Choon Ghee seem to be most popular with art collectors at the VIP preview of The Edge Auction in Singapore last night.

Held at the Helutrans art space at Tanjong Pagar Distripark,  some of Singapore’s leading art collectors and other members of the arts fraternity as well as corporate guests turned up for the special preview.
