Highlight: Singapore Preview

10 June 2013 - 12:00am

Art enthusiasts in Singapore will be the first to preview some of the best artworks from Malaysia selected for the inaugural sale of The Edge Auction on June 29 in Kuala Lumpur.

The auction which is by invitation only, will offer 33 modern and contemporary Malaysian art which include the works of many award-winning artists who have exhibited in Singapore in recent years. The list includes the paintings of Ahmad Zakii Anwar (b. 1955), Chang Fee Ming (b. 1959), Jalaini Abu Hassan (b. 1963), Chong Siew Ying (b. 1969) , Kow Leong Kiang (b. 1970) and Eric Chan (b. 1975). Price estimates of the artworks range from RM20,500 to RM 450,000.

Among the most recognizable names for Singaporean collectors is Chen Wen Hsi who was active in Singapore when it was part of Malaysia. His painting, entitled Egrets, is typical of his modernistic style executed in Chinese ink in the 1970s. This work is estimated to sell between RM35,000-RM50,000 (about S$14,000-20,000).

The top lot is Gelora 3 by Abdul Latiff Mohidin (b.1941) estimated to fetch between RM350,000-RM450,000 (about S$140,000-180,000).  Painted in 1987, the oil on canvas work is one of Latiff’s earliest paintings from his Gelombang series.

Among the unusual works to have surfaced for auction is an important painting by the late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein (1936-2009). An abstract oil on canvas executed in 1970,  Kuala Lumpur IX Months is estimated to bring in between RM250,000-RM350,000 (about S$100,000-140,000).

Other highlights of the sale include Trail of Zheng He – Semarang which was painted in 2012 by Chang Fee Ming. It is conservatively estimated to sell between RM80,000-RM100,000 (about S$32,000-40,000).
