Teh Tarik with the Flag is a group exhibition featuring 14 Malaysiana artists. They are Anurendra Jegadeva, Cheng Yen Pheng, Chong Kim Chiew, Choy Chun Wei, Fauzan Omar, Hamidi Hadi, Hasnul Jamal Saidon, Hayati Mokhtar, HH Lim, Ivan Lam, Rajinder Singh, Sean Lean, Sulaiman Esa and Yau Bee Ling.
Presented by UOB Malaysia, and curated by Wei-Ling Gallery, the exhibition commemorates the 60th anniversary of the National Visual Art Gallery of Malaysia.
The works are said to be the artists’ "reflections" of the Malaysian flag, known as the Jalur Gemilang. The “reflections” are said to affect the flag’s formal qualities and expand its symbolic meaning.
The gallery's press release states that, “in [this exhibition], artists reference the Jalur Gemilang to negotiate (sic) and investigate ideas relating to identity, nationalism, citizenship, as well as delve deeper to highlight the power structures they represent, and possibly conjure up new images for alliances and allegiances. More importantly, we hope the exhibition will establish new connections between the people and their Jalur Gemilang.
