In our sixth annual sale of Southeast Asian art, The Edge Auction 2018 again focuses on Malaysian works that include significant and major paintings by top names in the local art scene. And we have two paintings by Latiff Mohidin that should find a home among the discerning collectors of Southeast Asian art.
Entitled Rimba series (1997, 86cm by 96cm) and Tao Landscape (Homage to Lao-Tzu) (1999, 91cm by 91cm), the oil on canvas paintings are estimated at RM250,000 to RM300,000 and RM250,000 to RM300,000, respectively.
With Latiff’s ground-breaking solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from Feb 28-May 28 this year, collectors in Malaysia and around the region will surely reassess their own collections and wonder what they have missed out, so far.
A total of 124 lots will be going under the hammer and among the modernist works are paintings by other important Malaysian artists, namely, Datuk Syed Ahmad Jamal, Yusof Ghani, Jolly Koh, Datuk Tajuddin Ismail and Awang Damit.
Among the leading contemporary artists are signature works by Zulkifli Yusoff, Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Chong Siew Ying, Ahmad Shukri Mohamed, Noor Mahnun Mohamed and Chong Ai Lei.
A selection of rare works by distinguished artists are available for collectors who are looking to fill in the gaps in their collection. These interesting works were by some of the best known artists in Malaysia including, Dzulkifli Buyong, Kok Yew Puah, Kuo Ju Ping, Chia Yu Chian, Khaw Sia, Tan Choon Ghee and Chinese ink master Chung Chen Sun, who is in his eighties now.
Also featured is a selection of Nanyang-style works by Fung Yow Chork, Long Thien Shih, Lye Yau Fatt, Yong Look Lam, Alex Leong, Eng Tay, Choo Beng Teong, Loo Hooi Nam, Tang Juey Lee, among others.
For collectors looking for alternative media, photographs by the late Sultan of Terengganu, Almarhum Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah as well as the late Ismail Hashim are on offer. A batik painting by Ismail Mat Hussin representing the uniquely Southeast Asian medium is also available in this sale. Another rare find in this sale is a set of eight artist’s proof lithograph by Datuk Ibrahim Hussein.
Other sought-after works include rare or unusual compositions by Khalil Ibrahim, Amron Omar, Datuk Sharifah Fatimah Zubir, Rafiee Ghani, Fauzan Omar, Yusof Majid, Peter Liew, Anthonie Chong, Fauzul Yusri, Marvin Chan and Tan Wei Kheng.
Among other Southeast Asian art, the auction include works by Indonesia-based artists such as Jeihan Sukmantoro, Sudjono Abdullah, Mulyadi, Hudi Alfa, John van der Sterren, I Wayan Sadia, Kemal Ezedine, Dedy Sufriadi, Anak Agung Gede Oka Sudarsana and Tommy Tanggara.
Thailand is represented by remarkable painter, Boonchai Wedmakawand, who is also an accomplished photographer. Works by Filipino artists include that by Jeho Bitancor, Daniel Coquilla and Roger San Miguel.
The Edge Auction 2018 will be held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur on March 11 at 1pm. The public preview of the 124 lots will be held at The Edge Galerie in Mont’Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, from March 1 until March 9 (11am to 7pm) and on March 10 (11am to 3pm).
